You Probably Don’t Need to Become an “AI Person”

The pressure to reinvent yourself around AI is everywhere.
Learn the tools. Get the certification. Become an AI expert. Rewrite your professional identity before someone else decides your experience is obsolete.
For many experienced professionals, that is the wrong starting point.
The more useful question is not: How do I become an AI person?
It is: What is AI actually changing about my work — and where does my existing expertise become more valuable because of that change?
AI is changing tasks. Some work is being automated, accelerated, or redesigned. But a task is not the same thing as professional value.
Value also lives in judgment. Context. Relationships. Institutional knowledge. The ability to evaluate information, recognize risk, understand what matters, and make a decision when the answer is not obvious.
Those capabilities are easy to overlook precisely because experienced professionals use them every day.
Before rebuilding your career around a technology, read the shift more carefully.
Ask yourself:
What tasks in my work are genuinely changing?
Where is value moving away from execution and toward judgment, context, relationships, or oversight?
What signals am I actually seeing in my organization, clients, industry, or profession?
And perhaps most importantly: what is changing because of AI — and what is simply changing because the world of work is changing?
That distinction matters.
A career strategy built around generalized anxiety can send you chasing skills you do not need. A strategy built around observable change gives you something much more useful: a basis for deciding what to keep, what to augment, what to transfer, and what to build.
You do not necessarily need a new professional identity.
You need to understand how the information environment around your expertise is changing — and reposition accordingly.
That is adaptability.
The AI Career Adaptability Framework is a 5-page digital decision tool that takes you through READ → FIND YOUR INFORMATION ADVANTAGE → REPOSITION → ACT, ending in a 90-day adaptability plan. Available in the Leading Information Library for $29.
